Accounting for more than a quarter of all falls from height, falls from ladders remain a common work injury. Recent statistics suggesting that 12 people a year die and 1200 people per year suffer major injuries as a result. Many of these incidents could be avoided by using the right equipment and taking simple precautions. As part of their ladder safety campaign the HSE have been working with local authorities, ladder manufacturers and retailers to give businesses the opportunity to get their ladders checked and, where necessary, trade them in for new ones at a heavily discounted price. The Ladder Exchange will be an annual initiative, with the current campaign running until 31st December. Details of the discounts, partners , and how to get involved can be found here on the HSE website. The HSE is also keen to stress that ladders should only be used for low-risk, short-duration work.
