If 2010 keeps this pace up over the 50 weeks, we’ll be knackered by next Christmas. Manchester United dumped out of the FA Cup by League 1 opponents, the country brought almost to a standstill by snow, the first press conferences of the Election campaign, an extra bank holiday announced, a failed party putsch against the Prime Minister, the tightest of victories in the test match, Jonathan Ross leaving the BBC … so much for a slow start to the year. Any bets on the next three days’ headlines? With New Year’s Day falling on a Friday this year, I think most people expected to be back to work straight after the weekend, without that lull you find in the early days of January. The snow certainly put paid to that. The BWF is now more or less settled in its new offices, just by Liverpool Street station, and we are getting used to life as an independent body, out from under the wings of the now-defunct Construction Confederation. We’ve managed to keep working despite the snow (a tribute to the determination of the team in getting in here but inevitably the phones have been much quieter than usual. We’ve been using this week to catch up on ourselves in the aftermath of our quickly organised move in December. Moving in the middle of the subscription run – our busiest time of the year – wasn’t ideal, but we didn’t have much choice. No doubt the headlines will calm down and the phone lines pick up. But there’s more snow predicted for Sunday – is that the start of another week?
